As a Swedish winery in Österlen, every decision we make is guided by regenerative farming and a deep respect for the land.
At J.Friberg Winery, we believe in working with the rhythms of nature and following the changing seasons to create a healthy, balanced environment where our vines, wildlife and surrounding ecosystem can thrive together.
Nestled in Södra Mellby, Österlen, our Swedish vineyard is home not only to the vines that produce our wines, but also to fruit trees, apple orchards, vegetable gardens, berries, nut trees, meadows and woodland. Every element has its purpose, creating a thriving ecosystem where biodiversity supports healthier vines and more expressive wines.
The vineyard was established by the landowner Sven-Erik in 2009 with eight carefully selected grape varieties suited to Sweden’s cool climate. Since then, it has been thoughtfully cared for, with every season focused on strengthening both vine health and the living soil.
Since the vines were first planted, they have never been treated with chemical herbicides or synthetic fertilisers. Instead, we focus on regenerative farming practices that encourage biodiversity, improve microbial life and strengthen the long-term health of the vineyard.
Every decision we make in the vineyard is designed to encourage biodiversity and maintain the natural balance of the ecosystem. By increasing organic matter and promoting microbial activity, we create healthier soils, stronger vines and Swedish wines that genuinely reflect the character of Österlen.
Throughout the growing season, we nourish the vines with herbal teas and microbial fermentations that naturally strengthen their resilience. Our fertilisers come from locally sourced highland cattle manure, brown algae and compost teas, allowing us to care for the vineyard without relying on synthetic chemicals.
Jesper Friberg is a Swedish winemaker whose journey has taken him to some of the world’s most respected natural wine producers. He refined his craft at Felton Road in New Zealand before spending three years in France, working alongside renowned winemakers at Lapierre in Morgon and Eric Pfifferling at L’Anglore in Tavel. Today, he applies those experiences to crafting distinctive Swedish wines from his vineyard in Österlen.
Passionate about natural and sustainable winemaking, Jesper avoids chemical sprays wherever possible, instead relying on healthy soils, microorganisms and herbal teas to nurture the vines. His wines are celebrated for their vibrancy, purity and sense of place, reflecting both the unique landscape of Österlen and his commitment to minimal-intervention winemaking. Beyond wine, Jesper also restores traditional thatched roofs, reflecting the same respect for craftsmanship and heritage that guides his work in the vineyard.
